We had to move after my mom lost her job. The only place we could afford was a worn-down cottage with peeling paint. My new bedroom was on the ground floor, with a strange little door in the corner that was nailed shut. The room always felt cold.
At night, I would hear a soft scratching sound from behind that door. I told my mom, but she said it was just the branches of a tree rubbing against the outside wall. I didn’t believe her. I asked my sister Clara to come listen. She pressed her ear to the wall and agreed with our mom. “It’s just the wind,” she said.
Frustrated, I yelled that she was wrong. We argued, and she pushed me. I stumbled back against the small door, and the old wood splintered and gave way. We shone a light inside, revealing a steep, narrow staircase descending into darkness.
Curious, we climbed down. At the bottom was a room filled with dusty old furniture covered in white sheets. As we stepped inside, the door above us slammed shut. One of the sheets suddenly billowed up, rushing toward us with a high, piercing shriek. We were terrified, scrambling back up the stairs as fast as we could.
We told our mom everything. She came down with a flashlight, looking skeptical. But as she reached for the handle of the broken door, it began to vibrate violently in its frame.
