This happened 25 years ago, in the autumn of 1999. I was staying at my aunt’s old farmhouse in the hills of Vermont, helping her sort through boxes in the attic. The house had no electricity, only oil lamps and candles, and the nights were dark and still.

I woke up at 5:30 AM, not due to any alarm, but to a strange prickling sensation at the back of my neck. The room was cold, and a faint, greenish light seeped through the curtains. I thought it was dawn, but when I focused, I saw the clock on the bedside table: 5:30 exactly. Then I noticed that the light was not from outside. It was emanating from the hallway, beyond my door.

My heart began to race, but my body was frozen. I heard a soft, rhythmic tapping, like footsteps on the stairs, but not exactly. It was more like the sound of wet leaves being dragged across the floor. The door creaked open, and three figures appeared in the doorway, backlit by that green glow. They were an adult woman, a tall man, and a small child, all facing away from me, looking up. They were translucent, like images projected on smoke, but they had depth and volume.

I tried to speak, to ask who they were, but my voice was a whisper. The woman slowly turned her head, her eyes glinting with a faint inner light. She looked directly at me, her expression blank, and then she turned back. As she did, the figures began to descend, not walking, but sinking into the floor as if the house was swallowing them. The light faded, and the room plunged into darkness.

I didn’t sleep for days. I told no one, thinking I had imagined it, or that it was a side effect of the old cheese I’d eaten. But three weeks later, I was at a motel in New Hampshire, on my way back home. I woke up at 5:30 again, to the same green light and the same three figures standing at the foot of my bed. This time, the woman’s face was partially visible, and I saw that her mouth was open in a silent scream, and the child was pointing at the ceiling. They didn’t stay long, just a few seconds, and then they vanished.

I tried to rationalize it. Sleep paralysis? Hallucination? But the visions persisted, always at 5:30 AM, always with three figures. Over the years, I moved from place to place, always at night, always trying to escape. I changed my routine, started sleeping with the lights on, but it didn’t help.

Finally, after ten years of silence, I told my sister. She looked at me with a strange expression and said, ‘You saw the Carters, didn’t you?’ I asked who they were, and she told me a story that had been local legend for decades.

In 1974, a family of three died in a car accident on the road near that farmhouse. They were heading to a lantern festival, and the father was carrying a special lantern that had been in the family for generations. The accident was blamed on fog, but some said the lantern’s light was cursed. The family was never found, only the lantern, which was placed in the attic of the farmhouse by the owner at the time. My aunt had it in a box, and I must have briefly seen it when I was going through the attic.

The visions finally stopped when I returned to the farmhouse and found that lantern, locked in a trunk. I took it out and burned it in the fireplace. As the flames consumed it, I saw the three figures briefly, but they were smiling, and then they dissipated.

I never saw them again. But sometimes, when I wake up at 5:30 AM, I still feel a chill, and I swear I can smell smoke and pumpkins, and I hear a faint, distant sound like a child laughing. I don’t know if it’s my imagination or a remnant of the curse. All I know is, that lantern changed my life, and I will never look at fog the same way again.
