On a cold night in late autumn, after a long and tiring day, I fell into a deep sleep. In my dream, I awoke to the sound of something heavy falling over downstairs. A deep sense of dread filled the quiet house.
A strange coldness spread through me, and I felt a presence that was not my own take hold. A bitter anger, sharp and unfamiliar, pushed me out of bed. I moved down the hallway, my steps unnaturally long and swift, as if I were gliding.
I caught my reflection in a dark windowpane. The eyes looking back were a flat, soulless black. I passed my sister’s room, pausing only to give her a long, empty stare. I then turned and walked directly to my parents’ door. The dream broke apart just as my hand touched the handle.
