Eleanor, a woman whose autumn years had settled around her like a fine dust, had recently emerged from a week-long, medically induced slumber. A brutal E. coli infection had brought her to the brink, and while her body was slowly mending, a profound stillness had settled within her mind. Her partner, Julian, ever the rationalist, had accompanied me to Eleanor’s quiet cottage on the outskirts of Blackwood Forest. I, on the other hand, harbored a quiet fascination for the unseen, the veil between worlds.

As we sat in Eleanor’s sun-drenched living room, the scent of lavender and old paper hanging in the air, Julian gently steered the conversation towards Eleanor’s hospital stay. “Did you experience anything, Eleanor?”, he’d asked, his voice calm and measured. “Anything… unusual?”

Eleanor, frail but with a spark returning to her eyes, shook her head. “No, dear. Just darkness. A long, dreamless dark.” She paused, then her gaze drifted towards the window, towards the encroaching trees. “Though, it does make one think of those who’ve already crossed over, doesn’t it? My sister, Beatrice… she’s been gone these past two years.” Beatrice had succumbed to a sudden, brutal cardiac event, leaving a void that time seemed reluctant to fill.

“She always spoke of a place,” Eleanor continued, her voice barely a murmur, “a place where the threads of life were spun. She described it as a vast, silent loom, where everything was connected by shimmering strands of light. When she was dying, she said she saw the threads snapping, one by one. She felt the loom shudder.”

Julian offered a sympathetic smile, a gesture of comfort that felt hollow to me. But as Eleanor spoke, a strange sensation prickled the back of my neck. The sunlight in the room seemed to dim, and the scent of lavender grew heavy, cloying. I looked at Eleanor, and for a fleeting moment, her form seemed to shimmer, as if seen through heat haze. The intricate floral pattern on her shawl appeared to writhe, the threads of silk seeming to loosen, to fray.

“She said,” Eleanor whispered, her eyes wide, fixed on some point beyond the window, “that when the threads break, they don’t just disappear. They snag. They pull. And sometimes… sometimes they pull something back with them.” The air in the room grew colder, the silence deepening into an oppressive weight. The trees outside, which had moments before seemed so benign, now appeared to lean in, their branches like skeletal fingers reaching for the cottage. A faint, almost imperceptible hum began to fill the space, a vibration that resonated not in my ears, but in my very bones. It was the sound of something immense, something ancient, slowly, deliberately, beginning to unravel.
