In the quiet town of Willow Creek, nestled in the shadow of the Appalachian foothills, I had found a sanctuary: a converted carriage house behind a sprawling Victorian mansion owned by the reclusive Mrs. Abernathy. The apartment was modern, with an open floor plan that kept the kitchen, living area, and bedroom in one sightline. For the first month, I wore earplugs to drown out the unfamiliar creaks and groans of the old structure, but last week, I decided to embrace the silence of my new home.

It started on a mild June night. At 3:50 AM, I was jolted from a deep sleep by three thunderous bangs that seemed to originate from the kitchen, just beyond the low wall that separated it from my bed. My heart slammed against my ribs as I lay frozen, eyes wide, trying to parse the noise. It sounded like someone was pounding on the countertop with a heavy object. But there was no one there. After what felt like an eternity, I mustered the courage to get up, but I found nothing out of place. I reasoned it was a spoon that had slipped from the drying rack and hit the plastic bowl, amplified in the quiet dead of night.

Morning brought a chilling correction. On the floor beside the sink, I found my large carving knife, its blade resting against the lip of the bowl. It hadn’t been there the night before. I always placed it in the butcher block. The coincidence was too precise; the knife had to have been moved. A cold sweat broke out on my forehead. That night, I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone had been in my home, orchestrating this macabre prank.

The following night, at 3:34 AM, I woke to a sound that made my blood run cold: muffled footsteps, heavy and deliberate, traversing the wooden floor from the kitchen toward my bed. The steps were too slow, too measured, like something was pacing itself. I squeezed my eyes shut, too terrified to move, and listened as the thuds grew louder. Just as I felt the pressure of a presence at my bedside, a rancid smell of rotting meat and damp earth filled the air. A voice, low and guttural, whispered directly into my ear: ‘You sleep too soundly for a visitor.’ I felt a cold, clammy hand press down on my shoulder, and then silence. The footsteps retreated, and I remained paralyzed until dawn.

When I finally dared to open my eyes, the room was empty. But on the kitchen counter, arranged in a neat row, were every knife I owned, all pointing toward my bedroom. A note, written in a spidery script on a torn piece of paper, read: ‘The carver knows.’ I grabbed my phone and called the police, but when they arrived, they found nothing amiss. Mrs. Abernathy, when questioned, gave a tight-lipped smile and said, ‘The house has had its quirks for a century. Best not to linger on them.’

That night, I armed myself with a baseball bat and propped a chair under the doorknob. I did not sleep. At 3:47 AM, I heard a faint scratching at the door, like nails dragging across wood. A thin, reedy voice whispered, ‘You let me in once. Now I never leave.’ I knew then that the apartment was not a sanctuary but a mausoleum. I packed my things and fled, but as I sped down the driveway, I glanced in the rearview mirror and saw a figure standing in the window of the apartment, its face obscured, holding a carving knife that glinted in the moonlight. The clatter at 3:50 had been an invitation, and I had accepted without knowing.

Now, in a nondescript motel on the other side of the state, I still haven’t shaken the smell of decay. And every night, at 3:50 AM, I hear three bangs, no matter how many earplugs I wear.
