In 2009, my wife Elena and I rented a cramped one-bedroom apartment on the ground floor of an aging building in the industrial district of our city. The place was drafty, with a peculiar layout: a large living area with a galley kitchen, connected by a short hallway to our bedroom. The living room floor was cheap laminate, stained in places, while our bedroom had a worn, threadbare carpet. We were happy because it was cheap, and we never felt any haunting presence.

One night, just after the clocks had turned to September, I woke with a start. The apartment was steeped in darkness, the streetlights outside casting only a faint, orange glow around the edges of the blinds. I lay still, my heart thumping, listening to the hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak of the building. Then I felt it—a subtle pressure in the living room, like static in the air. A thought formed: something was there.

Though I am not usually given to such fancies, an image planted itself in my mind—a swirling column of dark mist, churning slowly in the center of the living room, its base brushing the laminate floor. It seemed to drift, but with purpose, as if searching. I felt no malice, but a deep wrongness, as though the air itself had been disturbed. I held my breath, but the feeling persisted. I reached over to nudge Elena, but she slept soundly, undisturbed.

A sudden thud came from the kitchen—the cabinet door under the sink, which I knew was closed, swung open and shut. I froze. The sound was clear, crisp, not like a draft. Then footsteps, light and quick, padded across the laminate, heading toward the hallway. My heart raced. I squeezed my eyes shut, praying that whatever it was would pass. The footsteps stopped at our bedroom door, just beyond the carpet line. The air grew thick, and I felt a presence linger there, watching.

I do not know how long I lay there, eyes pressed shut, waiting. At last, the presence receded, and the apartment fell silent. I remained awake until dawn, with Elena’s steady breathing as my only comfort. When morning came, the apartment looked ordinary. But I noticed something: faint swirl marks on the laminate floor, as if a vortex had been there, leaving behind a ghostly pattern. I tried to rub them out, but they persisted, faintly visible under the light.

We moved out a few months later. The memory faded, but I never forgot. I have told no one except Elena, who dismissed it as a nightmare. But I know what I felt. And sometimes, when the apartment is quiet and the lights are low, I still see those swirl marks in my mind’s eye, as if to remind me that the vortex is still there, waiting for the next family to arrive.
