The salt spray of the Chesapeake had long since leached into the very bones of the Victorian house Elias rented on the outskirts of Hampton. It was a relic, all peeling gingerbread trim and a widow’s walk that offered a bleak panorama of marshland and distant, indifferent ships. He lived there alone, having finally wearied of the forced camaraderie of ship life and the constant, low thrum of the naval base. His sanctuary was the master bedroom, a cavernous space that occupied the entire width of the second floor, its bay windows perpetually fogged with coastal damp.

One Tuesday, the air thick and heavy with the promise of a storm, Elias was sorting through a stack of old naval uniforms in the dim light of the master bedroom. The front door, a heavy oak affair, creaked open downstairs. He called out, his voice a low rumble in the quiet house, that he was upstairs. Moments later, a sound began to ascend the grand staircase – not the usual hurried clatter of footsteps, but a deliberate, agonizingly slow *thump… drag… thump… drag*. It was the sound of immense effort, of a body burdened beyond comprehension. Elias froze, his hands stilling on the rough wool of a dress blue. He could see the top of the stairs from his vantage point at the end of the upstairs hall. The sound continued, unwavering, a relentless, percussive march. It reached the landing, paused, and then resumed, *thump… drag*, moving down the hall towards him.

There was no one there. No shadow fell, no impression disturbed the dust motes dancing in the slivers of light. Yet the sound persisted, growing louder, closer. It stopped precisely at the threshold of his bedroom door. Elias’s breath hitched in his throat. The air in the room grew impossibly cold, carrying with it the faint, metallic tang of decay and something else… something cloying and sweet, like overripe lilies. He could feel a pressure building, a palpable weight settling on his chest, as if the very atmosphere was being compressed. He backed away slowly, his eyes glued to the empty doorway, the sound of *thump… drag* now a phantom resonance within his own skull. Then, from the silence where the footsteps had been, a new sound emerged: a soft, wet clicking, like insects disturbed in a dark, damp place. A single, impossibly pale tendril, slick and glistening, began to snake its way under the door, unfurling with a disturbing, organic slowness, its tip pulsing faintly, as if tasting the air.
