The old logging road, barely more than a scar on the face of the Blackwood Forest, was known only as ‘The Burn.’ Locals in the sleepy, forgotten town of Havenwood avoided it after dusk, their hushed tales weaving a tapestry of dread around its name. It wasn’t just the isolation, or the way the ancient pines seemed to lean in, listening. It was the lingering scent, faint but persistent, like charcoal and something acrid, something that spoke of pyres and a hunger that could never be sated.

Sarah, a newcomer to Havenwood, scoffed at the folklore. She was a photographer, drawn to the macabre beauty of decay, and ‘The Burn’ promised isolation and atmosphere in spades. Armed with her camera and a healthy dose of skepticism, she drove her beat-up sedan down the rutted track as the last vestiges of daylight bled from the sky. The air grew colder, the silence oppressive, broken only by the crunch of tires on gravel.

She found it nestled deep within a clearing, a structure that defied easy description. It wasn’t a building, not really. More like a colossal, rusted iron furnace, half-swallowed by the earth, its maw gaping like a wound. Twisted pipes snaked from its sides, disappearing into the overgrown underbrush. The acrid smell was strongest here, a tangible miasma that clung to her throat. A faded, almost illegible sign lay half-buried in the dirt: ‘Blackwood Creek Crematorium & Rendering.’ The ‘Rendering’ part sent a fresh wave of unease through her.

As she raised her camera, a flicker of movement caught her eye. A faint glow, like embers stirred by an unseen wind, emanated from the furnace’s opening. Then, a soft, wet sound, like something being dragged. Hesitantly, she approached, her heart hammering against her ribs. Peering into the darkness, she saw them – hunks of charred, twisted metal, eerily shaped like limbs, piled high within the furnace. But it wasn’t the metal that made her recoil. It was the distinct, undeniable impression of faces, contorted in silent agony, pressed into the slagged interior, as if the very walls remembered their torment. And from the depths, a low, guttural sigh seemed to rise, carrying with it the dry rustle of bones and the cloying scent of burnt offerings. Sarah stumbled backward, the click of her camera forgotten, the woods suddenly alive with a thousand unseen, hungry eyes.
