Mara had always been drawn to forgotten things. Old photographs, faded letters, and the crumbling reels of Super 8 film her grandfather left behind. She spent her evenings in the cramped attic of her inherited farmhouse, threading brittle celluloid through a flickering projector, watching ghosts of family gatherings dance on the peeling wall. It was a ritual of nostalgia, a way to touch a past she never knew.

One night, while reviewing a reel she had digitized, she noticed something odd. In the background, amid the crackle of the old recording, there was a voice. Not her grandfather’s, not her grandmother’s. It was low, almost like a whisper, but distinct. She replayed it over and over, straining to make out the words. Finally, she caught it: ‘My name is Drenn.’

Mara’s heart thumped. She had heard stories from her grandmother about a presence in the house, a spirit that lingered. But she had never heard it speak. She felt a mix of fear and curiosity, a strange thrill that she had made contact. She began to leave the recorder running in the attic, hoping to catch more.

Days passed. She captured nothing, only the hum of the projector and the creak of the old house. Then, one evening, she reviewed a new recording and heard the voice again, clearer this time. ‘Drenn. You know my name. Now let me in.’

A cold dread settled in her stomach. Let him in? What did that mean? She frowned at the recorder as if it might explain. She thought about her friend Liam, who also claimed to have a spirit contact. Liam had told her about a voice that called itself ‘Vesper’ in his apartment. She wondered if they were connected.

Curiosity outweighed caution. She began to research Drenn, scouring local archives and folklore. She found a mention of a man named Drenn who had died in a fire on the property in the early 1900s, leaving behind a wife and a child. The story said he had been a recluse, a tinkerer who spent his days in a small workshop behind the house, working on strange machines.

Mara decided to explore the site of the old workshop, now a collapsed shed overgrown with weeds. She sifted through the rubble, finding odd gears, rusted tools, and a metal box half-buried in the dirt. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, was a diary. The pages were brittle, but the handwriting was legible. It was Drenn’s diary, filled with ramblings about voices, about a door he was trying to open.

The last entry read: ‘They are not ghosts. They are travelers. They seek vessels. I have found the way. The machine will open the door. If you hear my name, do not speak it. Do not acknowledge. You will let them through.’

Mara felt a chill race down her spine. She had already spoken his name aloud, multiple times. She had recorded it. Panic gripped her. She rushed back to the house, her mind racing. She needed to destroy the recordings, to burn the diary, to undo this mistake.

As she entered the attic, the projector flickered on by itself. The reel spun, and the wall was filled with static. But amidst the noise, she saw a figure forming—tall, thin, with hollow eyes. It turned toward her, and its mouth opened in a silent scream.

Mara tried to scream, but no sound came out. Her body felt heavy, as if something was pressing down on her. The static grew louder, filling her ears, her mind. She saw her own hand reaching for the power cord, but it wasn’t her hand. It was Drenn’s, moving with purpose.

The last thing she saw was the projector’s light flickering out as the static swallowed her whole. In the silence that followed, the house stood empty, but the recorder in the attic clicked on, capturing a low voice that whispered, ‘Thank you for giving me a door.’
