I went to a friend’s birthday gathering and brought my small camera to take pictures. After a while, I grew a little bored and started taking photos of anything I saw. My friend’s home was in a quiet part of town. In the yard stood a large, old tree, and I thought it would make a nice picture.

I took the photo and looked at it on the camera screen. I saw several small, pale circles of light floating near the tree. I pointed this out to my friend, and the older brother of the party’s host overheard us. He said that people sometimes said their home had a history.

He explained that a long time ago, an elderly person had become very ill in the house. The family pets would sometimes stare at the empty hallway or act strangely for no reason. We all stood quietly for a moment, looking back at the tree in the fading light.
