The first time I felt it, I was drifting off in my cramped studio apartment, the hum of the city below a distant lullaby. A sharp, small pinch on my ankle, like a kitten’s playful nip, jolted me awake. I sat up, heart thumping, but the room was empty. No pets, no open windows, nothing. I dismissed it as a muscle spasm, a trick of the mind, and went back to sleep.

Months later, during a sweltering July afternoon, I was lounging with friends by the community pool. The conversation turned to strange occurrences, and I recounted the odd bite. On a whim, I rolled up my jeans to inspect my ankle. There, stark against my sun-kissed skin, was a perfect crescent of tiny teeth marks, faded but unmistakable. I felt a chill despite the heat, and my friends’ laughter died as they saw my blanched face.

A few nights after that discovery, I lay in bed, the ceiling fan whirring. From the center of my room, just a few feet away, came a faint, raspy breathing. It was labored, as if someone were taking their final breaths. I held my own breath, straining to listen. The sound was rhythmic, persistent, and utterly human. I flicked on the lamp, but nothing was there. The breathing stopped. I didn’t sleep that night.

This wasn’t the first time something inexplicable had happened in that apartment. A few months back, I had started noticing faint whispers, the shuffle of unseen footsteps, and once, a young girl’s voice calling my name. I had chalked it up to stress, a vivid imagination. But then, the presence vanished as suddenly as it had appeared, and I convinced myself it was over. Until last night.

I was on the edge of sleep, my body finally relaxed, when the sharp click of my plantation shutters made me freeze. In the dim light filtering through the blinds, I saw them slowly rotating, slats tilting open as if moved by an invisible hand. The motion was deliberate, unhurried. Then the footsteps, soft and deliberate, crossed the room and stopped beside my bed. I could feel a presence, cold and intent, hovering over me. A whisper, barely audible, brushed my ear: ‘I’ve been waiting.’

I snapped on the bedside lamp, and the room was empty. But the shutters were open, and the air was freezing. I noticed a small, dark mark on my forearm that hadn’t been there before—a fresh bite, the same crescent pattern. I scrambled to grab my phone, to call someone, but the line was dead. The breathing resumed, louder now, from the corner of the room. And in the reflection of the darkened window, I saw a young girl, her eyes hollow, smiling at me with a mouth full of needle-like teeth.

I have not slept since. The bites keep appearing. And every night, she comes closer, a little less translucent, a little more real. I don’t know what she is or what she wants, but I am terrified of the moment she will become solid enough to touch me. This is my confession, my plea for help. If you read this, know that she is real, and she is hungry.
