I’m Elara, and I’m fourteen. We moved into this old farmhouse in the Welsh countryside when I was six. It was charming, with its creaking floors and ivy-covered walls, but I always felt like we were intruders. When I was nine, I began to feel eyes on me. Not just at night, but in the middle of the day, in the kitchen, in my room, even in the bathroom. I’d spin around, expecting to catch someone, but there was never anyone there. It was like a tickle at the back of my neck, a constant prickle.
At age eleven, I woke from a dream about a sunny beach to find a large, gray cat sitting on my little brother’s chest, staring at him as he slept. Beside the bed stood a tall, thin man with hollow cheeks and piercing eyes, watching me. I screamed and squeezed my eyes shut, and a rush of whispers filled my ears, like a dozen voices all trying to speak at once. I yelled, ‘Go away!’ and after a long minute, the whispers faded. When I dared to look, both the cat and the man were gone.
I told my mother, and she was more freaked out than I expected. She brought in a local woman who claimed to be a psychic. She said that an old farmer and his wife had lived here before us, and that the man I saw was the farmer. She said they meant no harm, but they were trapped in a loop, reliving their final days. They were searching for something, she said, but she couldn’t tell what.
My grandfather, who I was very close to, was diagnosed with cancer last winter. Since then, the activity has exploded. I see shapes darting in my peripheral vision, doors creak open on their own, and I find muddy footprints leading from the back door to the cellar and stopping. A few weeks ago, I found an old pocket watch in the attic. It was engraved with the initials ‘J.H.’ and the date 1897. I wound it, and it started ticking. Ever since, I’ve been hearing a faint scratching sound coming from behind the walls. It’s rhythmic, like someone writing with a quill. My grandfather’s condition is worsening, and I can’t shake the feeling that the farmer’s spirit is somehow connected. The psychic warned me not to engage, but I’m starting to think the farmer isn’t looking for a memory—he’s looking for a way out, and I might be the key.
