I’ve always considered myself a rational person, the kind who dismisses creaks in the night as settling wood and drafts as faulty seals. But there is one place in my apartment that defies all logic: the bathroom. Every time I step through that doorway, the air itself seems to change. Above my waist, it’s as normal as any other room, but below, around knee height, there’s a peculiar thickness, a subtle pressure that moves with a life of its own. It’s not cold, not warm, just a presence that brushes past my legs as if I’m sharing the space with something else.

At first, I chalked it up to an overactive imagination, a trick of the fluorescent light flickering overhead. I even joked to my friend Maya that I had a ghost dog, but the thought lingered. I’ve lived here for five years, and I’ve never owned a pet. The building’s previous tenants? I asked the landlord, but he said no dogs were allowed in this unit. Still, the sensation persists. Sometimes I’ll be brushing my teeth and feel a gentle nudge against my calf, light as a feather, yet undeniably there. Other times, I’ll be mid-shower and sense something circling me near the floor, its presence patient and watchful.

Last week, I decided to test my theory. I set up my phone to record, propped against the sink, and left it running while I did my nightly routine. The next morning, I watched the footage with a pounding heart. At one point, as I was washing my hands, I saw the bath mat wrinkle near the edge, as if something had stepped on it. A few minutes later, the shower curtain swayed slightly, despite the window being closed and the vent off. I replayed it a dozen times, my mind racing for a logical explanation, but finding none. It wasn’t a draft. It wasn’t a vibration. It was something moving through the room at knee height.

Driven by a mix of fear and curiosity, I began to research the history of my building. It was a converted Victorian house, and in the early 1900s, it had been a family home. I found old census records and discovered that a family with a young boy had lived here. The boy was reported to have died of scarlet fever at the age of seven. I tried to find more details, but the archives were sparse. Then I stumbled upon an old photo in a local history group: a boy, maybe four years old, standing in front of what looked like this very building. He was wearing a sailor suit and grinning, but what caught my attention was the small dog beside him—a scruffy terrier, no bigger than his knee. The caption read: ‘The Henderson family and their faithful companion, 1904.’

That night, I couldn’t shake the image of that dog. Could it be that the presence I felt was a lingering echo of that long-dead terrier, tied to this place? But why the bathroom? I had no answers, only more questions. As I lay in bed, I felt a familiar pressure at the foot of my mattress, just above my ankles. I froze, my breath catching. The pressure moved slowly, as if settling down to curl up. I didn’t dare move a muscle. And then, just as suddenly as it had appeared, the weight lifted, and the room felt still.

I haven’t been in the bathroom since. I’ve been using the gym at work, but yesterday, coming home late, I couldn’t hold it any longer. I burst through the bathroom door, flicking on the light with a trembling hand. The air was heavy, more so than ever. I did my business, trying not to look down, but as I went to flush, I caught a glimpse in the mirror. For a split second, I could have sworn I saw a shadow detach itself from behind the door and slip into the bathtub. I spun around, but there was nothing. Yet, when I looked down at the tub, there was a faint, damp paw print on the white enamel, slowly evaporating before my eyes.

I’m writing this now, sitting in my living room, typing furiously because I need to make sense of this. I’m no ghost hunter, but I know what I felt. And if anyone has a theory, if you’ve ever experienced something similar, please reach out. Because I’m starting to think that this presence isn’t a dog. It’s something else, something that’s been waiting for me, and it’s getting bolder. And I’m terrified to find out what it wants.
