When I was very young—just a toddler—I lived with my mother and grandmother in an old, quiet house. The house felt heavy sometimes, like something forgotten lingered in its corners.

One day, my mother and I stepped out for a few minutes, leaving my grandmother downstairs doing laundry in the basement. Unbeknownst to us, the basement had a small, locked-off storage room from long ago.

Upstairs, my grandmother finished folding clothes and began climbing the stairs. At the top step, she saw me sitting there. Straight-faced, I asked her, “Can I have a glass of water?” Because she believed it was me, she hurried to the kitchen, poured water, and placed it on the dining table near the door.

But just then, there was a knock at the door. My grandmother went to answer it and was surprised to find me—safe with my mother, who had come back because she’d forgotten something. My mother confirmed I’d been with her the whole time. Stunned, my grandmother looked at the table—and the glass of water was still there, exactly where she had left it.
