The Forgotten Path

Jake and his friend Lila often spent time at their favorite spot, a small clearing surrounded by trees and a thick grove nearby. One afternoon, Lila mentioned she needed to use the restroom. The fastest route back home was through the grove. They had always avoided this path due to unsettling tales shared by other kids, but with no other choice, they hesitated before entering.

As they ventured deeper into the grove, the shadows grew longer, and an uneasy feeling settled over them. Suddenly, they heard a faint shuffling noise nearby. They exchanged anxious glances but saw nothing unusual, so they pressed on. A moment later, the sharp crack of a branch echoed through the air, causing Jake to jump. He instinctively turned to investigate, peering into a thicket. When he turned back, Lila had vanished.

Panic gripped him as he called her name, fear tightening his chest. Where could she have gone? He sprinted forward, glancing over his shoulder, when a rush of cold air hit him unexpectedly. His heart raced as he spun around and spotted Lila standing a few paces away, her face pale and wide-eyed.

Before he could ask what happened, he noticed it—a shadowy figure lurking between the trees. Without thinking, Jake grabbed Lila’s hand, and they bolted in the opposite direction, their hearts pounding as they raced towards the safety of home. That day in the grove would remain etched in their memories, a chilling reminder of the unknown lurking just beyond the light.
