In the autumn of 2011, my wife left for a week-long business trip, leaving me and our two kids, ages six and eight, alone in our new house. We had moved into a sprawling Victorian home on the edge of a quiet town, and the house had a peculiar feature: a long hallway leading to the master bedroom, with a clear sightline into the living room. The living room boasted a high ceiling with a large, ornate skylight that let in the moon’s glow at night.

That first evening, as I tucked the kids into bed, I noticed a strange, dark smudge in the corner of the living room, near the skylight. I dismissed it as a trick of the light, but as the days passed, the smudge seemed to take shape. It was a tall, thin figure, darker than the shadows around it, and it would stand in that corner, its head tilted as if studying me. On the third night, I saw it raise a hand, slowly, and wave at me. I felt a chill, but I convinced myself it was just my imagination, a play of moonlight through the leaves outside.

By the fifth night, the figure’s waving became more insistent, almost frantic. Its arm swung side to side, and its head moved as if trying to catch my eye. My dog, a golden retriever named Biscuit, would growl low in his throat, his hackles raised, staring at the corner. I ignored it, telling myself it was just a draft or a shadow from the trees. The kids slept peacefully, and I thought, ‘It’s just my eyes playing tricks after too little sleep.’

On the final night of my wife’s absence, I lay in bed with the kids curled up beside me, watching a movie with the volume low. The figure in the corner was more solid than ever, its outline sharp against the dark wall. It was waving with both hands, its movements jerky and deliberate. I turned my head slightly, trying to ignore it, when suddenly, it stopped. The arms dropped to its sides, and the figure stood perfectly still. A wave of dread washed over me, so intense that my stomach clenched. In that moment, I felt as if I were being watched not from the corner, but from above.

Biscuit started barking uncontrollably, his body trembling, his eyes fixed on the ceiling above the living room. He wouldn’t leave the bed, scrabbling at my leg, as if begging me to run. I lay frozen, my heart pounding, and out of my peripheral vision, I saw the shadow figure begin to rise. It floated upward, defying gravity, and merged into the dark skylight. Then, from above, I heard a soft scraping sound, like fingernails on glass, followed by a low, guttural whisper that seemed to come from every direction: ‘I see you.’

I grabbed the kids and ran into the hallway, my phone in hand, dialing 911. As I looked back, the skylight was now filled with a pair of luminous, pale eyes staring down at me. The shadow was gone, but the eyes remained, unblinking, tracking my every move. The dispatcher heard my frantic plea, but by the time the police arrived, the eyes had vanished, and the house was silent. I never slept in that room again, and we moved out a month later. To this day, I can’t look at a ceiling without a shiver, and I still hear that whisper in my dreams, always the same: ‘I see you.’
