In the winter of 2022, my wife and I booked a secluded cabin in the Catskills, hoping to escape the city’s clatter. The cabin, named ‘The Ledger House’ by its former owner, was nestled deep in the woods, accessible only by a winding gravel road. From the moment we stepped inside, a chill clung to the air, and the old wooden floors creaked underfoot as if protesting our arrival. My wife, Ava, dismissed it as the mountain draft, but I felt an unwelcome presence, as if the house itself was watching us.

After unpacking, I went to the porch to enjoy a cigar, closing the sliding door behind me to keep the smoke out. Ava headed to the bathroom to wash up. As I stood there, the wind howled through the pines, and the porch light flickered. Inside, the lights went out, plunging the cabin into darkness. I heard the sliding door open and footsteps cross the wooden floor, assuming Ava was moving about. But then the footsteps stopped right outside the bathroom door, and I felt a sudden coldness, not from the wind but from something else, a presence that made my skin crawl.

I dropped my cigar and rushed inside, fumbling for the flashlight on my phone. The power was out, but the faint glow from the phone revealed Ava frozen in the bathroom doorway, her face pale. She whispered, ‘I heard footsteps, but it wasn’t you.’ We checked the cabin, every corner, every closet, but found no one. The doors and windows were locked from the inside. The cold spot near the bathroom grew more distinct, and we noticed that the old oil lamp on the mantle had been lit, though we hadn’t touched it.

That night, we barely slept, huddled together under layers of blankets. The next morning, we discovered a tiny room behind a bookshelf in the study, hidden by a false panel. Inside, we found a dusty ledger, filled with indecipherable handwriting and dates going back decades. The last entry read: ‘December 1987, the debt is paid in full.’ As we read, the temperature plummeted, and the lamp in the study flickered on its own, casting eerie shadows. We realized the cabin had been a waystation for the previous owner, a ruthless accountant who collected secrets rather than money, and his spirit still lingered, collecting what he believed was owed.

We tried to leave, but the gravel road was blocked by a fallen tree that appeared overnight. With no cell service and no way out, we were trapped. Over the next few days, strange things happened: objects moved on their own, whispers echoed in the walls, and the ledger’s pages turned by unseen hands. One night, I woke to find Ava standing by the window, staring into the darkness, muttering numbers under her breath. I shook her awake, and she looked at me with terror, saying, ‘He wants to add us to the ledger.’

On the third night, we discovered the previous owner’s grave in the backyard, marked only with a stone that read ‘The Debtor.’ As we stood there, a cold gust swept through, and the ledger appeared at our feet, open to a blank page. We both felt a tugging on our souls, as if being pulled into the book. In a desperate act, I grabbed the ledger and built a fire, throwing it into the flames. As it burned, a piercing scream echoed through the woods, and the cabin shook. The next morning, the tree was gone from the road, and the sun shone brighter than before. We packed our things and drove away, never looking back.

Months later, we moved to a new city, but the memory of that place lingers. Sometimes, at night, I hear the sound of footsteps stopping outside our bedroom door, and I catch the faint smell of cigar smoke, a reminder that some debts are never truly settled, and the ledger always finds its balance.
