In this haunting 1987 Hong Kong horror, a small-time triad member (Chow Yun-Fat) stumbles upon a desperate letter hidden inside an antique desk. Written by a young girl who perished from illness, the letter reveals a chilling afterlife bargain: she was posthumously wed to a grotesque ghost husband and now seeks a living soul born on a specific lunar date to trade three years of life for her freedom. As the line between the living and the dead blurs, the man is drawn into a supernatural romance that is as tender as it is terrifying. With atmospheric dread and a tragic ghost story at its core, Gui xin niang weaves a melancholic yet spine-tingling tale of love, sacrifice, and the restless dead.

User Reviews
GhostWhisperer – 7/10
“I love the atmosphere in this one – it's so moody and melancholic. Chow Yun-Fat is great, but the ghost girl really stole the show for me. The ending was bittersweet, though I wish they'd explored the ghost husband more – he was properly creepy.”
VintageSlasherFan – 5/10
“It felt a bit dated and slow for my taste, but the concept of a posthumous marriage is genuinely unsettling. The scares are more subtle and emotional than I expected. If you're into supernatural romance over jump scares, it might work for you.”
CinemaSoul – 6/10
“I appreciated the blend of horror and tragedy – it's a classic ghost story. Chow Yun-Fat brings his usual charisma, and Cherie Chung is hauntingly beautiful. Some parts dragged, but the letter scenes gave me chills. Solid for its era.”
NightTerror – 8/10
“This one crept under my skin. The atmosphere is thick with dread, and the ghost's backstory is heartbreakingly sad. The scene where she appears in the mirror still gives me nightmares. Highly recommend for fans of atmospheric Asian horror.”
