In the decaying aristocracy of 17th-century France, a lord’s son is torn from his cradle by a band of gypsies, who etch a ghastly, unending grin into his flesh as a curse. Years later, the disfigured man, now known as Gwynplaine, hides his monstrous smile behind a mask, earning his keep by exposing his grotesque visage to horrified crowds. But beneath his terrifying exterior beats a heart yearning for love, found only in the innocent blindness of Dea, a girl who sees not his deformity but his soul. Yet as he rises from carnival freak to the edge of nobility, the shadows of his past and the perversions of the elite threaten to devour the fragile happiness he has found. A chilling silent horror that lingers on the thin line between beauty and abomination, where every smile is a scream.
