The Crypt Keeper is back — and he’s hosting Halloween all month long.
One of horror’s most recognizable hosts has crawled out of the crypt once again.
AMC has officially brought back The Crypt Keeper as the host of FearFest 2026, marking the 30th anniversary of AMC’s annual Halloween horror event.
The character returns with a newly recreated practical puppet, new hosting segments and the unmistakable voice of John Kassir.
And for fans of Tales from the Crypt, this isn’t simply another Halloween marathon. It marks the first new Crypt Keeper content in 30 years.
The Crypt Keeper Is Back
The Crypt Keeper originally became famous as the wisecracking host of HBO’s Tales from the Crypt, the horror anthology series based on the EC Comics property.
Now, three decades after the original series ended, the character is returning to television screens as the official host of AMC’s 2026 FearFest.
AMC’s Halloween celebration officially began October 1, 2026, and runs throughout the month on AMC and AMC+.
This year’s FearFest features more than 650 hours of horror movies, franchises, series, specials and other programming, making it one of AMC’s biggest Halloween celebrations yet.
And there’s a familiar face leading the festivities.
Greg Nicotero Recreated the Crypt Keeper
The new Crypt Keeper isn’t simply an old clip or digital recreation.
Special-effects master and filmmaker Greg Nicotero rebuilt the legendary puppet through his effects company, KNB EFX.
Nicotero is already closely associated with practical horror effects and genre television, including his work on The Walking Dead and Creepshow.
For FearFest, he recreated the character while updating the puppet’s appearance, movement and personality for the new segments.
Nicotero also directed the Crypt Keeper’s FearFest appearances.
The original Crypt Keeper puppet was created by legendary effects artist Kevin Yagher for Tales from the Crypt.
For Nicotero, recreating the character meant returning to one of horror television’s most memorable practical creations.
John Kassir Is Back Too
Perhaps the most important part of the comeback is the voice.
John Kassir returns as the voice of the Crypt Keeper, bringing back the character’s distinctive laugh, delivery and dark sense of humor.
Kassir originally voiced the character throughout Tales from the Crypt, helping turn the Crypt Keeper into one of the most recognizable horror hosts of the 1990s.
For the new FearFest segments, Kassir once again provides the character’s signature voice and cackle.
So while the puppet has been rebuilt, one of the most familiar elements of the Crypt Keeper remains exactly where fans would expect it.
30 Years After Tales from the Crypt
The timing of the comeback is significant.
Tales from the Crypt ended its original HBO run in 1996.
FearFest 2026 therefore represents a return to new Crypt Keeper material after roughly three decades.
AMC is also celebrating the 30th anniversary of FearFest itself, making the Crypt Keeper an appropriate host for the milestone.
The character will appear throughout the month in newly produced FearFest segments rather than simply appearing as part of archived Tales from the Crypt footage.
What’s Playing During FearFest 2026?
The Crypt Keeper is only one part of AMC’s enormous October lineup.
FearFest 2026 includes programming built around some of horror’s biggest franchises and filmmakers.
Fans can expect marathons and programming featuring:
- Halloween
- A Nightmare on Elm Street
- Friday the 13th
- Final Destination
- Insidious
- Stephen King adaptations
- Tales from the Crypt
- Creature Feature
- Fear the 80s
- And more horror movies, series and specials
AMC is also using FearFest to showcase newer genre programming, including The Terror: Devil in Silver and AMC+’s supernatural thriller YAGA.
FearFest Starts With Halloween
The October 1 kickoff includes a Halloween marathon, beginning with Halloween III: Season of the Witch before moving through several entries in the franchise.
The evening then leads into a Tales from the Crypt marathon, giving viewers a chance to watch the show associated with FearFest’s new host.
Other themed marathons follow throughout October, including Insidious, Stephen King films, Final Destination, Chucky, creature features and classic 1980s horror.
For horror fans, the schedule essentially turns October into one long Halloween movie marathon.
Why the Crypt Keeper Still Works
There are plenty of horror icons, but the Crypt Keeper occupies a slightly different place in the genre.
He’s not the killer.
He’s not the final monster.
He’s the storyteller.
That makes him particularly suited to hosting a month-long horror celebration.
His combination of horror, comedy, macabre jokes and outrageous personality helped make Tales from the Crypt stand apart from many other anthology shows.
Bringing him back as the face of FearFest allows AMC to connect today’s Halloween audience with a character strongly associated with 1990s horror television.
Is Tales from the Crypt Coming Back as a New Series?
Not based on this announcement.
AMC’s current announcement concerns the Crypt Keeper’s new FearFest hosting segments.
It does not announce a new full season of Tales from the Crypt.
That’s an important distinction for fans hoping for a complete revival of the anthology series.
For now, the confirmed comeback is the Crypt Keeper himself, appearing throughout AMC’s FearFest programming with newly produced segments.
The Crypt Keeper’s Halloween Comeback
After 30 years, the Crypt Keeper is once again welcoming horror fans into the Halloween season.
With Greg Nicotero rebuilding the practical puppet, John Kassir returning to voice the character, and AMC filling October with hundreds of hours of horror programming, FearFest 2026 is putting one of the genre’s most recognizable hosts back in the spotlight.
And unlike a reboot that completely reinvents the character, this return keeps some of the original creative ingredients intact.
A practical puppet.
The original voice.
The familiar laugh.
And plenty of horror.
