The day had been long and difficult, filled with challenges that left me feeling small. After eating, I hoped a warm shower would calm my thoughts, but the worry about my unfinished assignments clung to me. Getting ready for bed, a familiar sensation of being observed returned, but I had learned to ignore it long ago.
I lay in the dark for a long time, listening to the house settle into silence. The final click of a light switch from my parents’ room told me the hour was late. Eventually, a troubled sleep found me.
I was jolted awake by a crushing pressure on my chest. My room felt distant from the rest of the sleeping house. A cold dread filled me as a force seemed to press inward, as if trying to pull the very air from my lungs. I tried to call out, but my throat was sealed shut, my voice trapped. I pushed back with all my strength against the unmoving presence. With one last, desperate internal cry for help, the pressure vanished all at once.
I did not wait. I ran straight for my parents’ door.
