The damp air of the old mill clung to Elara’s skin like a shroud. It was her fourteenth summer, and her parents, eager for a change, had bought the derelict riverside property, its skeletal remains a stark contrast to the bustling market town they’d left behind in Derbyshire. The mill, once a hub of industry, now stood silent, its great wheel frozen in perpetual repose. As the eldest of five, Elara’s nights were often filled with the rustle of younger siblings settling into sleep, a quiet responsibility she bore with a mixture of pride and trepidation. Tonight, however, after tucking in Finn, Maeve, Liam, Clara, and baby Jasper, an unnerving stillness descended, heavier than the usual domestic quiet.

She felt it first – a prickling sensation on her nape, the distinct, unsettling awareness of being observed. A shiver, not entirely from the evening chill, traced its way down her spine. Grabbing the heavy iron poker from beside the hearth, its cold metal a scant comfort, she began her patrol. The grand, empty rooms of the miller’s cottage, now her family’s home, seemed to stretch and twist in the flickering lamplight. Each creak of the floorboards, each sigh of the wind through the broken panes, was amplified, morphing into imagined footsteps and hushed threats. She found nothing, no stray animal, no errant draft, only the oppressive weight of an unseen presence.

With a sigh that felt too loud in the profound silence, Elara returned the poker to its place, the familiar weight of it now seeming utterly useless. She started up the winding staircase, the wood groaning under her weight as it had countless times before. Her hand gripped the rough, splintered banister, her gaze fixed on the landing above. And then, she stopped. Frozen. At the apex of the stairs, shimmering in the dim light, stood a figure. It was vaguely man-shaped, translucent, its form indistinct like smoke or mist, clad in what appeared to be tattered, archaic garments. But it was the hands that held her captive – long, impossibly thin fingers that seemed to weave threads of moonlight into the very air, intricate patterns that dissolved as quickly as they formed.
