I was fourteen when the stillness first found me. It happened in my room, the one with the blue curtains. I had been asleep, lost in a dream I could no longer recall. I awoke to the sound of a young girl’s voice, softly calling “sister, sister.”

I tried to sit up, but my body was made of stone. I could only twitch a finger before it fell back, heavy and useless. I was lying on my left side when the room flooded with a pale, grey light. Then I felt a weight pressing down on my chest, and the voice spoke again, “sister, sister.”

The grey light returned, and when it faded, a figure stood beside my bed. It faced away from me, its head tilted. A single, dark stain spread across its scalp, and from it, a lock of hair twitched and swayed on its own. The voice repeated its call. I was terrified.

When I finally broke free, my heart was hammering against my ribs. The experience was deeply strange.

It happened again a few weeks later, in the same room. I awoke to find myself hovering near the ceiling. An ancient man, his skin like dried paper, floated inches from my face. He hummed a tuneless song, the notes sounding like “la loo raaa.” I could speak this time, and I told him to go away. I squeezed my eyes shut until, after half a minute, the feeling passed.
