I have never experienced anything like this before and I’m hoping someone can offer some explanation or advice.

I went to bed last night as usual, with my girlfriend, Maya, who stays over some nights. We got to sleep around 2:00 AM. The rain had been tapping against the window all evening, a steady, rhythmic lullaby that usually helps me drift off. But that night, the silence after the rain stopped felt heavy, as if the world was holding its breath.

I never checked the time, but I was awakened by something shaking me roughly. My eyes snapped open to see a dark figure close to my face. My first thought was that it was Maya, her hand on my shoulder, waking me because she had to leave early for work. It was a habit of hers to nudge me gently before she got up, so I didn’t panic. I even mumbled something like, ‘Okay, I’m up.’

But as my vision cleared, I saw that the figure was not Maya. It was tall, looming over the bed, its shape indistinct but unmistakably masculine. I tried to focus, but the details were blurred, like looking at a photograph taken in motion. The face was shadowed, but I could feel eyes staring at me from within the darkness. My heart started to race, but my body felt paralyzed, as if I were pinned by an invisible weight.

I turned my head, just a fraction, to check on Maya. She was there, lying beside me, her breathing soft and even. She was still asleep. In that instant, a cold wave of terror washed over me, so intense it felt like a physical shock. I looked back at the figure. It hadn’t moved, but I could sense that it was aware I had seen her. It tilted its head, as if studying my reaction.

I wanted to scream, to shout for help, but my throat felt constricted, and no sound would come out. I couldn’t move, couldn’t even blink. The figure slowly backed away from the bed, its form seeming to blur at the edges, losing solidity until it was just a darker patch in the darkness of the room. Then, with a final look, it passed through the closed bedroom door, as if the wood were nothing more than thin air.

As soon as it vanished, my body snapped back to motion. I sat up, gasping, my heart pounding so hard I could hear my blood roaring in my ears. I fumbled for the lamp on the nightstand and switched it on, flooding the room with harsh, unforgiving light. The room was empty, of course. The door was still shut, the lock in place. I checked the hallway, the living room, the kitchen, but everything was as it should be. The front door was locked, the windows were closed, and there was no sign of any forced entry.

I shook Maya awake, my hands trembling. She sat up, alarmed, and I tried to explain what I had seen. She listened patiently, but I could see the doubt in her eyes. She said I must have had a vivid dream, or a night terror. She reminded me that the alarm clock showed 3:17 AM, and that it was a common time for such things. But I knew what I saw. This was not a dream. The feeling that had washed over me was too real, too primal. It was as if I had been in the presence of something not of this world, something ancient and malevolent.

I have never felt that way before, not even as a child when I was convinced there were monsters under my bed. This was different. It was as if the figure had a purpose, a message, and my complete stillness was the only reason it didn’t harm me. I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was waiting for something, or that it was disappointed I didn’t react.

All my doors and windows were locked, as usual. This was not an intruder from this life, I just knew it. The way I felt deep down, I didn’t scream, I just stared back, wondering why this thing was here and what it wanted. I couldn’t get myself to speak or react in any way. It’s almost as if my survival instinct took over, telling me to remain perfectly still until it left. I can’t describe the relief I felt when it vanished, but also a creeping dread that it might come back.

I’ve been sitting here in the kitchen, drinking coffee and watching the sunrise, trying to make sense of it. Maya has gone back to bed, chalking it all up to a bad dream. But I haven’t slept. I’ve been on edge, jumping at every creak and shadow. I keep looking at the clock, counting the minutes until I can go to work and put some distance between myself and that room.

But even now, in the bright morning light, I can’t shake the feeling that something is watching me. I keep glancing at the bedroom door, half expecting the figure to walk through it again. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to sleep in that room alone again. I’ve never been so scared in my life.

If anyone has any idea what this could be, or what it might want, please tell me. I’ll try anything to get rid of it. I can’t live like this, with that thing out there, waiting.
