My friend Clara had a problem with a shadowy figure that would sometimes appear outside her bedroom window. It scared her so much that she hung a small, painted charm on the window latch, and the visits stopped for a long time.

One afternoon, I went to her room to try on a sweater. The window was stuck because a pile of books was leaning against it. I moved the books to her desk and shut the window firmly. I was just pulling the sweater over my head when the window slid back up with a sharp scrape.

I called out, “Clara, hold on, I’m not decent!” I pushed the window down again, making sure it was locked. Instantly, it rattled and began to rise once more. I put my whole weight against the glass pane, and then I felt the metal latch turn under my hand, all by itself. I pulled back and looked out, but the yard was completely empty.

I hurried downstairs and found Clara and her older brother in the kitchen. I told them what happened, and they both went pale. They said they had been making sandwiches the entire time. Clara looked at me and asked, “Did you move the charm from the window?” I admitted that I had. We all stared at each other, and then we made her brother go put it back.
