My friend confided in me about her situation, swearing me to secrecy, but I feel I must share it out of concern.

She lives with her grandmother, who insists that their family carries an ancient talent. My friend wants no part of it and tries to ignore the old woman’s teachings.

In their home, two small beings reside. She describes them as short figures wearing conical caps. They sometimes leave crimson droplets on the floorboards, but these stains fade away within minutes.

The creatures understand human speech. Once, as she rested on her couch, one poked her ankle. She instinctively shoved it away. It cried out to its companion, “See? The couch-girl pushed me!” The other answered, “You deserved that.”

Her family’s house also shelters five spirits. She has only described two to me. One is a tall, pale figure that lingers by the garden gate, forever staring up at her window.
