In the autumn of 2015, Claire moved into her grandmother’s old farmhouse on the outskirts of Helena, Montana. The house, built in the 1920s, had been untouched for decades, and her stepfather had recently fixed the leaky roof, the faulty wiring, and the creaky furnace. After those repairs, Claire began to notice odd occurrences. Cold spots would form in the hallway even when the heat was on, and at night, she heard the rhythmic creak of a rocking chair from the unused nursery upstairs. She felt a constant, prickling sense of being watched, especially in the pantry, where the scent of mothballs and lavender lingered.

One evening, while passing the pantry, Claire heard a faint, mechanical whirring sound. Intrigued, she pushed open the door and found an old spinning wheel hidden behind sacks of potatoes. It was dusty, but the wheel turned smoothly, as if it had been used recently. Claire touched the wheel, and it spun on its own, faster and faster, until a thin, silvery thread appeared from the bobbin. The thread extended into the air, weaving an intricate pattern that resembled a hand. The hand pointed to the ceiling, then vanished.

That night, Claire dreamed of a woman in a faded blue dress, her face obscured, spinning wool by lamplight. The woman hummed a lullaby and glanced at Claire with sorrowful eyes. In the dream, the woman whispered, ‘He never should have left.’ When Claire woke, she found a strand of the silvery thread wrapped around her finger, and the nursery door was open.

The next day, Claire noticed that the dust in the house had formed patterns on the floor, like a spider’s web leading to the nursery. She climbed the stairs, and in the nursery, the rocking chair rocked gently on its own. In the corner, a cradle, previously empty, now held a small, tattered doll. The doll’s eyes seemed to follow her. Claire picked it up and saw a tiny, handwritten note pinned to its dress: ‘For my little one, never born.’

Determined to understand, Claire searched the attic and found an old journal belonging to her great-grandmother, Elsie. The journal entries spoke of a difficult pregnancy, a husband who left for the gold mines, and a child who was stillborn. Elsie had taken to spinning wool endlessly, as if to mend the broken threads of her life. The final entry read: ‘I have spun a soul into the wool. My child will find a home.’

Claire realized with horror that the spinning wheel was more than just a relic. It was a conduit for her great-grandmother’s grief, and the thread was a remnant of a spirit seeking to be born. As she stood in the nursery, the rocking chair stopped, and a cold breeze swept through the room. The doll’s eyes turned to Claire, and a voice like dry leaves whispered, ‘You are my mother now.’

Terrified, Claire tried to burn the spinning wheel, but the fire only made the thread glow brighter. The thread began to wrap around her ankles, pulling her toward the nursery. She screamed, but no sound came out. The window slammed shut, and the lights flickered. The spinning wheel turned by itself, and a spectral woman in a faded blue dress materialized, her face tear-streaked and hollow.

‘You must finish the weave,’ Elsie said, her voice sorrowful. ‘I never completed it. You carry my blood, and you must finish what I started.’ Claire felt the thread pull her hand, guiding her to the spinning wheel. She sat down, her fingers trembling, and the wheel began to turn. The thread wove into a delicate blanket, and as it finished, the ghost of Elsie smiled, and the house fell silent.

Claire sat in the nursery, the blanket in her lap, and a faint weight in her womb. She knew that the following spring, she would give birth to a child that was not entirely her own—a child of thread and grief, created by the unseen spinner. And as she looked out the window, she saw the ghostly figure of Elsie, rocking on the porch, waiting for her grandchild to arrive.
