It was a quiet afternoon and I was alone in the house. My mother had asked me to watch the garden from the kitchen window while she was away. My sister was upstairs listening to music, and I was sitting at the table, sketching in my notebook.
Suddenly, my chair jerked forward sharply. I grabbed the table to keep from falling. I looked around the empty room. The front door was closed and my sister had not come down.
I went back to my drawing. A moment later, I felt a sharp tug on my shirt collar. It was strong enough to pull me back. I called out, but no one answered. I looked out the window and saw two stray dogs sniffing near the fence. They weren’t supposed to be there, so I went to tell my sister, though I didn’t mention what had just happened to me.
