The January air in Oakhaven bit with a sharpness that promised snow, but the sky remained an indifferent, pale grey. Elias pulled his worn coat tighter, the weak afternoon sun doing little to dispel the gnawing chill. He was walking through the forgotten part of Willow Creek Cemetery, a place his grandfather, a groundskeeper here for forty years, had always warned him away from. Not out of fear, his grandfather had always insisted, but out of respect for the unsettled.

It was near the oldest section, where the marble angels had long since lost their features to time and acid rain, that he saw her. A girl, no older than six, stood by a cluster of newly disturbed earth. She wore a simple, pale blue nightdress, the fabric looking impossibly delicate against the stark brown of the turned soil. Her hair, a dark, tangled curtain, obscured her face, but Elias could hear her, a soft, keening sound like a lost bird.

He’d seen her from maybe twenty feet away, a clear, bright figure against the muted tones of the winter cemetery. She wasn’t translucent or flickering; she seemed as solid as any living child. He’d taken a step towards her, a question forming on his lips, when she turned. Her movements were unnervingly smooth, like water flowing over stone. She didn’t walk, not exactly, but seemed to glide. As she turned, her hair shifted, and for a terrifying instant, Elias saw her face. Her eyes were wide, vacant pools of obsidian, and her mouth was a silent, stretched O of pure terror. Then, she simply wasn’t there. She had moved behind a gnarled, ancient oak, and when Elias circled the trunk, expecting to see her dart away, there was only empty space and the wind whistling through bare branches.

It wasn’t until weeks later, after an uneasy conversation with his aging grandfather, that the pieces began to slot into place. The recent, quiet news about a child, a little girl named Clara, who had vanished from her home on the edge of town six months prior. Her disappearance had been a mystery, her body never found. But Elias’s grandfather, his voice heavy with a dread he hadn’t heard before, had spoken of strange occurrences near that particular oak, a spot the old groundskeeper himself now avoided. He’d mentioned, in a hushed tone, that the earth there had been dug up and refilled not long before Clara went missing, by a desperate, grieving father looking for answers that would never come. The boy in the bloody pajamas was a phantom born of a tragic echo, and the girl in the blue nightdress was a nascent bloom of a much deeper, colder horror, rooted in the disturbed soil of Oakhaven.
