The old house on Blackwood Creek had always been a place of quiet dread, even before Elias and his younger sister, Clara, inherited it from their estranged aunt. Their aunt had lived a reclusive life, her days spent tending to her overgrown gardens and her nights filled with an unspeakable solitude. Elias, ever the pragmatist, dismissed the local tales of the creek’s murky depths and the shadows that clung to the ancient oaks surrounding their new home. Clara, however, felt it—a persistent, cold hum beneath the floorboards, a sense of being watched from the periphery of every room.

One rain-lashed Tuesday, a battered sedan crawled up the long, weed-choked driveway. A woman, her face a roadmap of anxieties, stepped out. Elias recognized her from a faded photograph in his aunt’s study—a cousin, perhaps, or a distant relative. She wrung her hands, her words tumbling out in a frantic rush, barely coherent. She was leaving, she explained, leaving everything behind. She couldn’t stay another moment. Elias, wary, asked if she needed help. She waved a dismissive hand, her eyes darting towards the perpetually darkened windows of the house.

As she turned to go, the hem of her worn, gray cardigan snagged on the sharp corner of the antique mahogany dining table. She yanked it free with an impatient tug, and a small, irregular tuft of wool detached itself, clinging to the dark wood like a morbid burr. Without another word, she scrambled back into her car and sped away, her tires spitting gravel into the encroaching twilight. Elias watched her go, a knot of unease tightening in his stomach. Her frantic departure was unlike anything he’d ever witnessed.

He turned back towards the house, intending to retrieve the torn wool. But before he could reach the door, the landline, a relic of a bygone era, shrieked to life, its jarring ring echoing through the cavernous entryway. Elias answered, his voice tight. It was the local sheriff, his tone grave. He spoke of an unidentified woman, found hours earlier, tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident on the highway miles away. The description, though vague, sent a wave of ice through Elias. The sheriff mentioned a peculiar detail: the victim was wearing a distinctive gray cardigan, now inexplicably missing a small, irregular tuft of wool.
