The move to Oakhaven was as abrupt as a slammed door. My father’s job vanished, and so did our comfortable suburban life. We ended up in a fixer-upper on the edge of town, a two-story relic with more drafts than character. My room was in the basement, a musty space that perpetually smelled of damp earth and forgotten things. As I unpacked, wrestling boxes of my meager possessions, a persistent tapping began.

*Tap. Tap-tap. Tap.* It emanated from the wall behind my bed, a rhythmic, insistent sound. I mentioned it to my father, his brow furrowed with the weight of new responsibilities. “Old pipes,” he’d dismissed, his voice lacking conviction. My younger sister, Clara, ever the skeptic, joined me one afternoon. She pressed her ear to the cool plaster. “Just the house settling, Liam,” she declared. Frustrated, I snapped, “It’s not settling, it’s *knocking*.” In my agitation, I stumbled, my shoulder crashing into the back of the built-in wardrobe. The flimsy particleboard gave way with a splintering groan, revealing not insulation, but a gaping void.

Curiosity, that dangerous impulse, overrode my fear. We retrieved a pair of dusty flashlights from the garage and peered into the darkness. A narrow, steep staircase, crudely fashioned from rough-hewn logs, descended into blackness. Hesitantly, we made our way down. At the bottom, a heavy, iron-banded wooden door stood sentinel. It creaked open with an agonizing shriek, revealing a small, subterranean chamber. Cobwebs draped like macabre decorations, and the air was thick with the scent of decay. Old crates and forgotten furniture lay shrouded in sheets. As we stepped further inside, the door slammed shut behind us with the force of a gunshot. A low guttural moan filled the oppressive silence, and from the far corner of the room, a pulsating mass of what looked like… unraveled linen, but moving, began to glide towards us. It was a sickly, off-white, and a sound like tearing flesh emanated from its core. We scrambled back, our flashlights trembling, and bolted up the stairs, babbling incoherently to my father.

He, ever the pragmatist, descended with a crowbar. As he reached the bottom step and approached the wooden door, a deafening series of blows began to rain down from the other side, as if something immense and enraged was desperately trying to break through. The heavy iron doorknob began to twist and shudder violently in his grasp.
