The salt spray off the Atlantic had a way of clinging to everything in Port Blossom, a perpetually damp coastal town where fog was less an occasional visitor and more a permanent resident. We’d bought the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage for a song, charmed by its isolation and the rugged, windswept beauty of the shoreline. Elias, my husband, was an artist seeking inspiration, and our daughter, Clara, was a quiet child drawn to the sea. I just wanted a change from the oppressive heat of the city.

Our first week was idyllic, filled with the cries of gulls and the ceaseless rhythm of the waves. Then came the night the music box started. It was Clara’s, a delicate thing with a ballerina that spun when the lid was open, a gift from her grandmother. She always kept it on her bedside table, its lid firmly shut. But that night, it began to play its tinny, melancholic tune from the landing at the top of the narrow, winding stairs. The sound, amplified by the empty house, was jarring, each note a tiny hammer blow against the silence.

We found Clara’s door closed, and she was fast asleep, undisturbed. The music box sat on its usual spot. Elias, ever the rationalist, suggested a draft, a tremor from a passing ship. But there was no wind that night, and the sea was unnervingly still. The music box continued its eerie serenade for a full minute before abruptly stopping, leaving a silence far more profound than before. We checked the stairs, the landing, but found nothing out of place.

This became a pattern. Not every night, but often enough to fray our nerves. Sometimes it was the music box, other times a small, tarnished silver locket that Clara wore constantly, a family heirloom. We’d find it not on the stairs, but nestled on the mantelpiece in the drawing-room, or worse, placed carefully on the dark, barnacle-encrusted rock pool just below the cottage’s cliff face, perilously close to the rising tide. Clara, when awake, had no memory of moving them. The music box would play its broken melody, the locket would appear in impossible places, and the fog would roll in, thicker and more suffocating with each passing day, muffling the world outside and deepening the mystery within our little cottage by the sea. We were becoming prisoners of our own home, haunted by the gentle, inexplicable movements of Clara’s possessions, and the chilling realization that whatever was doing this was both silent and deliberate, weaving its way into the fabric of our lives with the unsettling grace of the tide itself.
