The damp air clung to Elias like a shroud as he navigated the desolate stretch of Highway 17, the old logging road that snaked through the pine-choked mountains. It was well past midnight, the kind of darkness that swallowed the meager moonlight whole. He was returning from a late shift at the mill, the monotonous drone of the engine a poor comfort against the encroaching solitude. As his headlights cut through the gloom, they illuminated a figure by the side of the road. A woman, it seemed, dressed in what looked like a tattered, old-fashioned sundress, her back to him. She stood unnervingly still, her posture a strange blend of dejection and defiance. Elias slowed, a knot of unease tightening in his gut. He knew these roads; no one walked them this late, especially not out here.

Then, his gaze flickered to the oncoming lane. A pair of headlights, impossibly bright, were cresting the rise. A truck, he realized with a jolt of adrenaline, its speed alarmingly high. The woman, with a deliberate slowness that seemed to mock the approaching vehicle, began to step into the path of the oncoming truck. Elias instinctively slammed on his brakes, the tires protesting on the loose gravel, bracing for the inevitable sickening thud. He squeezed his eyes shut, unable to watch, the screech of tires a deafening prelude.

But the sound never came. Instead, there was only the whoosh of air as the truck barreled past, its horn blaring in a long, indignant blast. Elias, heart hammering against his ribs, slowly opened his eyes. The truck was gone. The road was empty. Except, the woman was no longer by the roadside. She was gliding, spectral and silent, directly through the grill of his own idling pickup. Her form shimmered, indistinct, like heat haze rising from asphalt, and her face, when she finally turned it towards him, was a mask of vacant sorrow, her eyes two empty sockets reflecting the dying glow of his headlights. He felt a cold dread, deeper than any winter night, seep into his bones. He didn’t wait to see her pass. Elias fumbled for the gearshift, his hands slick with sweat, and gunned the engine, tires spitting gravel as he fled into the darkness, leaving the silent, shimmering presence behind on the lonely mountain road.
