The air in the old Grand Arcade hung thick with the scent of stale popcorn and a metallic tang that spoke of long-decayed machinery. Elias stood near the entrance, a restless energy buzzing beneath his skin. His companion, Lena, had just ducked away to greet a familiar face, leaving him momentarily adrift in the cavernous space. It was then, by the dormant, dust-laden carousel, that he saw the figure.

A man, impossibly still, clad in a waistcoat of deep crimson and a hat that seemed to absorb the dim light. He was gazing not at the decaying grandeur of the arcade, but at something Elias couldn’t perceive, his face a mask of profound, almost serene detachment. No one else seemed to notice. The few patrons milling about navigated around him with an unconscious, fluid grace, as if he were a phantom limb of the architecture.

Elias felt a prickle crawl up his spine, an inexplicable compulsion. It was more than just oddity; it was a profound disorientation, as if the very fabric of reality had shifted to accommodate this solitary observer. He felt an urge, primal and unsettling, to reach out, to confirm the man’s solidity, to anchor himself in the tangible world.

Before the thought could fully form, the man began to move. He didn’t walk so much as glide, his tailored trousers brushing against the grimy floorboards. He passed Elias with his gaze fixed ahead, a silent river flowing through a stagnant pool. Elias watched, mesmerized, as the man entered the adjoining hall, a dimly lit space filled with the skeletal remains of vintage pinball machines. And then, he was simply gone. Not out of sight, not behind a machine, but *gone*. Elias blinked, his breath catching in his throat. The space where the man had been was empty, yet the impression of his presence lingered, a stain on the air, like a forgotten scent that refuses to dissipate.
