The old farmhouse sagged under the weight of years, its timbers groaning like arthritic bones. Elara had only lived there six months, a reluctant transplant from the city after her father’s unexpected passing. Her new neighbours, a tight-knit community in the isolated valley, kept to themselves, their faces etched with a quiet, almost ancestral weariness. Among them, however, was a girl named Maeve, a whirlwind of restless curiosity and a secret repository of local folklore. Maeve spoke of ancient pacts and the veil between worlds thinning at certain times. They found the object tucked away in the dusty attic of Maeve’s ancestral home, a smooth, palm-sized stone unlike anything they had ever seen. It was cool to the touch, pulsing with a faint, almost imperceptible warmth that seemed to seep into their bones. Maeve, ever the bolder of the two, insisted it was a focal point, a conduit. They decided to test its supposed properties one moonless night, away from the prying eyes of the superstitious villagers, in a clearing deep within the whispering woods that bordered their properties.

As they sat cross-legged, the stone between them, a strange stillness descended. The usual nocturnal chorus of insects and rustling leaves fell silent. A low hum began to emanate from the stone, growing in intensity, vibrating not just through the earth but through their very skulls. Shapes began to coalesce at the periphery of their vision, like heat haze given form, swirling and indistinct. Maeve, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and exhilaration, whispered forgotten words, her voice barely audible above the escalating hum. The air grew heavy, thick with an scent that was both sweet and cloying, like overripe fruit left too long in the sun. It was the smell of decay, of something trying to bloom.

A sudden, violent gust of wind, though no trees swayed, tore through the clearing, extinguishing their lantern. Darkness consumed them, absolute and suffocating. The hum intensified, no longer coming from the stone but from everywhere at once. Then, a sound, wet and guttural, tore through the air, followed by a distinct, sickening crunch. Elara felt a sharp tug on her arm, Maeve’s hand, suddenly ice-cold and slick. She scrambled backwards, her heart hammering against her ribs. Through the oppressive blackness, a faint, phosphorescent glow began to bloom, originating from where the stone had been. It pulsed rhythmically, casting grotesque, elongated shadows that danced with a life of their own. The scent intensified, the cloying sweetness now thick with the metallic tang of something freshly spilled. Maeve let out a strangled gasp, her grip tightening painfully on Elara’s arm, and then, with a sound like tearing silk, she was gone, pulled into the suffocating dark by an unseen force, leaving Elara alone with the pulsating, sickly bloom of light and the growing certainty that the woods had finally claimed their due.
