At sixteen, Mara considered herself too old for stuffed animals, but the lumpy, hand-stitched bear she found at the dusty thrift shop on the edge of town was different. It wasn’t cute; its button eyes were mismatched, one black, one brown, and its fur was a faded, patchy brown. The tag, handwritten, read: ‘Made with love, for someone who needs a friend.’ Something about it drew her in, a strange pull she couldn’t explain. She bought it for two dollars and took it home.

That night, she placed the bear on her pillow as usual, amidst the other plushies that had long since lost their charm. As she drifted off, a warmth spread across her back, like a weight settling onto her spine. It was the distinct pressure of a body, limbs aligning perfectly with hers, a hug from behind. Startled, she opened her eyes, but the room was empty. The sensation was not scary; it felt like a protective embrace, a shield against the darkness. She told herself it was just her imagination, a trick of a tired mind, and she fell asleep feeling strangely comforted.

The next night, she left the bear in the living room, determined to ignore it. Yet, as she lay in bed, the same weight returned, lighter this time, like a ghostly touch. It hovered over her, tracing the shape of her body through the blanket. A whisper, too faint to make out words, rustled in her ear. Fear crept in, and she curled into a ball, pulling her knees to her chest. The pressure receded, as if sensing her distress.

The third night, she couldn’t resist. She brought the bear back to her room and placed it on the nightstand, watching it warily. As she settled, the weight came again, heavier, more deliberate. It pressed her into the mattress, and she felt long, slender fingers brush against her shoulder. A low, guttural voice, like dry leaves scraping, rumbled from the empty air: ‘You can feel me.’ She screamed, but the sound was muffled by the pillow as she buried her face. The presence withdrew, leaving her trembling.

Now, it’s the fourth night. Mara lies rigid, staring at the bear on her nightstand. Its button eyes seem to glint in the dim light from the hallway. The air grows cold. She hears a soft creak, as if on the stairs. The door slowly swings open, revealing a dark silhouette that is too large to be human, its outline shifting like smoke. It steps closer, and she sees its face: not a face, but a void, with two small, mismatched eyes – one black, one brown. It reaches out a hand, and her own hand involuntarily lifts to meet it. As their fingers touch, a flood of images crashes into her mind: a girl, alone and frightened, clutching a bear, whispering, ‘You’ll always be with me.’ The beast’s voice is in her ear, now clear and sorrowful: ‘She never let me go. Now you will too.’ The bear on the nightstand opens its stitched mouth, and a black, oily substance drips from it, pooling on the wood. The creature leans down, its breath icy, and Mara hears herself whisper, ‘I will.’
