While Clara was visiting her sister in another country, her husband Mark remained at home. One night, Clara woke up trembling from a powerful dream. She had seen Mark driving on a wet, winding road through hills. His car swerved to avoid a large animal that leaped from the bushes, and the vehicle slid into a deep ditch.
She could see it all clearly: the glistening road, the startled deer, and Mark’s unharmed but shaken face behind the wheel. The feeling of dread stayed with her until morning. She called Mark as soon as she could, her voice shaky as she described the dream.
There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Finally, Mark spoke, his own voice filled with disbelief. He told her that the previous evening, on his way back from a late meeting, a deer had indeed jumped in front of his car on a hilly road. He had managed to avoid a direct hit, but his car had skidded off the pavement into a shallow gully. He was perfectly fine, but stunned by the coincidence.
For weeks after, Mark would look at Clara with a new, wondering expression, as if she held a connection to a world he could not see.
