My partner and I were spending a few days with his family in their old countryside house. Because I was expecting a child, the narrow bed in the main room was too small for both of us. I ended up sleeping on the fold-out bed in a small side room, while he remained in the larger space.
In the middle of the night, I woke up suddenly. A tall, dark form of a person was looking right at me from beside the bed. I rubbed my eyes, thinking my vision was blurry, but it remained. A feeling of dread filled the quiet room.
The figure was positioned where a heavy cabinet stood, a place where no living person could fit. My heart pounded. I slipped out of bed and hurried to find a light. When I returned, the space was empty, but the cold fear lingered in the air.
