A few weeks ago, I stopped by my old friend Lisa’s house before heading home. We’ve known each other for years, and even though we’re not as close as we used to be, we still keep in touch. She greeted me at the door, then turned and sat on the staircase leading upstairs.

The house was simple—stairs on the right, a small dining area to the left, and a narrow hallway running to the kitchen in the back. The living room sat in the middle, and in the hallway was a basement door. As I stood by the front door talking to her, a shadow suddenly rushed from the kitchen, turned sharply, and shot up the stairs, passing right by her.

I stepped back, heart pounding. “Did you see that?” I asked.

She didn’t even look surprised. “You mean the shadow?”

“Yeah! That shadow!”

She sighed. “Well, at least I’m not crazy. I’ve been seeing it for a while now.”

As we spoke, I noticed something forming in the corner of the front room—a deep, shifting darkness that seemed to swallow the light around it. I turned toward the kitchen, then glanced at the front window, hoping to use the reflection to see whatever was in that corner. But I couldn’t. The mass was too dark, blotting out everything behind it.

A chill ran through me. “You feel that cold?” I asked.

She shrugged. “That room’s always cold.” Then, as if nothing was wrong, she casually walked upstairs, leaving me standing there.

I leaned against the front door, staring into the room. The darkness in the corner started to fade, and I took a deep breath. “Who are you? Why are you here?” I asked, my voice firm.

Instantly, a freezing gust hit my face. At the same time, I heard footsteps on the stairs, though I could see no one there.

Lisa came back down and went into the kitchen to make coffee. From upstairs, faint noises—shuffling, creaking—echoed down to us. “How long has this been going on?” I asked, still shaken.

“A couple years,” she said. “But it’s gotten worse in the last few months.”

Since that night, strange things have started happening to me. At work, objects move when I’m not touching them. My coworkers notice but can’t explain it. I feel something around me—watching, waiting.

Maybe whatever was in that house followed me. Or maybe, it was never just in that house to begin with.
