The Shadow at the Window

Late at night, around 2am, I woke up to my small dog barking in the living room. I was half-asleep and called him back to bed. He usually sleeps next to me, so it was strange for him to be away. He ran back, jumped onto the bed, but instead of lying down, he sat stiff, staring at the bedroom door. His ears were up, his body tense.

Suddenly, as if he heard something I couldn’t, he bolted out of the room, barking even louder. I found it odd—he had a pet door, yet he didn’t go outside like he normally would if there was an animal or stranger nearby. Something was keeping him inside.

Curious and a little uneasy, I decided to check it out. I didn’t turn on any lights, moving quietly toward the living room. My dog was standing in front of the sliding glass door, growling low. I followed his gaze outside. At first, I saw nothing—just the bushes swaying slightly in the night breeze.

Then, I saw it.

A tall, dark figure stood at the edge of my yard, close to my bedroom window. It wasn’t moving, just standing there, watching. My chest tightened, and my dog barked furiously. Then, in a blink, the figure was gone. Not like it walked away—just vanished.

I stood frozen for a moment, my mind racing. Eventually, I forced myself back to my room, climbed under the covers, and somehow drifted off. My dog lay beside me, silent for the rest of the night.

In the morning, I checked outside. There was nothing there—no footprints, no sign anyone had been in my yard. I kept thinking about what I had seen. Could it have been connected to the loss I recently suffered? A loved one gone too soon? Or was it something else, something not human?

I still don’t know. But every night since, my dog sleeps a little closer.
