The night air in the industrial district of Meridian was thick with the smell of rust and damp concrete. I, along with my three friends—Marta, Leo, and Jenna—had decided to take a late-night stroll through the abandoned rail yard, a place we’d often heard rumors about but never dared explore. At 11:45 PM, our phones glowed with the time, and we laughed at our own daring, ignoring the chill that crept up our spines.

As we trudged past a row of derelict warehouses, Marta pointed at a looming structure ahead. ‘That’s the old Meridian High School,’ she said. ‘They closed it down after the accident.’ Leo, always the skeptic, rolled his eyes. ‘What accident?’ Marta’s voice dropped to a whisper. ‘A student fell from the third-floor balcony. Right over there.’ We all turned to look at the dark, skeletal building, its windows like empty eye sockets. The balcony she indicated jutted out like a broken arm into the night.

Despite our unease, Leo suggested we play a game of hide and seek among the rusted shipping containers scattered around the yard. We agreed, trying to shake off the gloom. I found a spot behind a stack of decaying crates, my heart thumping in rhythm with the distant hum of a generator. The game was in full swing when I heard Leo’s scream, sharp and piercing. I rushed out to find him ashen-faced, pointing toward the school. ‘I saw something,’ he stammered. ‘A figure, leaning over the balcony. Staring right at us.’

Just then, the girls emerged from their hiding spots, their faces flushed with anger. ‘That’s not funny,’ Marta snapped. ‘We saw you two peering around the corner of the admin building a minute ago. You nearly gave us a heart attack.’ Leo and I exchanged bewildered glances. ‘We’ve been here the whole time,’ I insisted. But Marta was adamant. ‘We saw someone in a dark hoodie, watching us. It had your build, Leo.’

The argument was cut short when a loud clang echoed from the direction of the school. We froze, every nerve on alert. Then, a low, rhythmic sound began—like footsteps on metal stairs. They grew closer, descending from the balcony we’d been staring at. A shadow detached itself from the building’s side, moving fluidly between the derelict cars. It was tall, thin, and wore a dark hoodie that obscured its face.

‘Run!’ I shouted, and we bolted. We sprinted through the maze of containers, the sound of our footsteps mingling with the entity’s pursuit. I could hear its breathing, ragged and wet, just behind me. I dared a glance back and saw it had closed the distance, its hood falling back to reveal a face that was blank, smooth, featureless—like a mannequin’s. It reached out a hand, and I felt a cold draft brush my neck before we burst out onto the main road, nearly colliding with a passing car.

We didn’t stop until we reached Marta’s apartment, gasping for breath. We locked the door, drew the blinds, and sat in the living room, silent. No one dared speak. After a while, Leo pulled out his phone to show us a photo he’d taken during the chase. It was blurry, but there, in the background, was the hooded figure standing at the edge of the rail yard, its head tilted as if it were watching us. And in the center of its chest, a faint white shape—a numeral, ‘3’, glowed unnaturally.

We haven’t returned to the rail yard since. But sometimes, when I’m alone at night, I catch a glimpse of that same figure out of the corner of my eye, standing across the street or down the hall. And I remember the balcony, and the boy who fell, and the number three. I know it’s waiting for us to come back, to finish what it started. And I’m terrified that one day, we’ll be the ones falling.
