Eleanor had just moved into her first solo apartment, a quaint, slightly dilapidated unit above a quiet bookstore in the historic district of Oakhaven. The rent was suspiciously low, a fact she attributed to the building’s age and the peculiar stillness that seemed to cling to the air. Her only window, a large bay overlooking a narrow, cobblestone alley, was almost entirely obscured by an overgrown, ancient willow tree that reached its skeletal branches right up to the glass, its leaves rustling with a sound like dry, papery skin.

Her best friend, Chloe, called nightly, her voice tight with a fear Eleanor initially dismissed as overwork and stress from her demanding new job. “It’s the hallway, El,” Chloe would stammer, “It… it stretches. And sometimes, when the light hits it just right, there’s a shape, just at the far end. Like a doorway that shouldn’t be there.”

Eleanor, enjoying the quiet solitude of her new life, waved away Chloe’s concerns. “You’re imagining things, Chlo. This place is perfectly normal, just old.”

But a persistent unease began to creep into Eleanor’s own nights. A feeling of being watched, a subtle chill that had nothing to do with the drafty old window. One evening, Chloe’s voice, usually a cascade of nervous energy, was flat, devoid of emotion. “I’m coming over, El. I need you to see this. I need you to believe me.”

When Chloe arrived, her eyes were wide and haunted. She clutched Eleanor’s arm as soon as the door opened, her knuckles white. “Don’t look down the hall, not yet,” she whispered, her gaze fixed on something Eleanor couldn’t see. She led Eleanor on a tour, pointing out the high ceilings and the charming, if crooked, built-in bookshelves. As they entered Eleanor’s small bedroom, Chloe’s hand trembled as she gestured towards the closet door.

“This is where it started for me,” Chloe breathed, her voice barely audible. “That closet. It feels… heavy. Like something is trapped inside.”

Hesitantly, Eleanor reached for the doorknob. It was unnaturally cold. As her fingers brushed against the wood, a wave of nausea washed over her. A single, suffocating thought bloomed in her mind: *Someone did this here. Someone ended it.* She yanked her hand back, slamming the closet door shut. “Get out, Chloe,” she said, her own voice shaking. “Get out now.”

Chloe didn’t argue. She left, and Eleanor locked the door behind her, leaning against it, her heart pounding. She glanced towards the hallway, and for the first time, saw it too – a faint, shimmering distortion at the far end, a place where the shadows seemed to gather with an unnatural density. The willow tree outside tapped its dry branches against the glass, a percussive, unsettling rhythm in the suffocating silence.
