In the summer of 2009, my family rented a decaying Victorian manor on the foggy coast of Maine, a place called Gull’s Perch. The house had been vacant for decades, its paint peeling like dried skin, and the locals avoided it, muttering about the previous owner, a spinster named Eleanor Vance who had vanished in 1952, leaving behind her collection of antique mirrors that still hung on every wall.

On our first afternoon, my younger brother Tim and I were kicking a soccer ball in the gravel drive when I noticed the bay window of the parlor. The sash began to rise, inch by inch, with a groan that sounded like a exhale of old breath. A figure stood within the glass, a woman in a long black dress, her face a pale blur. I grabbed Tim’s arm, and we froze. The figure raised a hand, beckoning. Then the window slammed shut so hard the panes rattled. We ran to the front door, burst into the parlor, but it was empty. The window was locked, dust undisturbed on the sill.

Later that evening, as the Atlantic fog rolled in, Mom called us into the kitchen with a tremble in her voice. She was clutching a kitchen towel, her knuckles white. She told us she had been alone in the house, and she’d felt a presence behind her, a cold breath on her neck. Remembering the old legend, she whispered, ‘If it’s you, Eleanor, show me a sign.’ A gust of wind swept through the room, though every window was shut, and the antique mirror over the sink fogged up, forming a single word: LEAVE. We stared at it until the condensation evaporated.

That night, I couldn’t sleep. Tim and I shared a room at the end of the hall, its walls covered with floral wallpaper that seemed to shift in the dim moonlight. Around 2 AM, I heard a creaking from the attic stairs, which were concealed behind a door in our room. The door slowly opened, revealing pitch blackness. A hollow voice, like wind through a broken pipe, whispered our names: ‘Tim… Sarah…’ We pulled the covers over our heads, but the whispering grew louder, and I felt a cold hand brush my ankle. Tim screamed, and we both ran to Mom’s room, finding her huddled under the covers, muttering prayers.

We didn’t sleep that night. At dawn, we decided to explore the attic, hoping to find answers. The stairs led to a dusty space filled with old trunks and furniture draped in white sheets. In the center stood a full-length mirror, wrapped in chains. The chains were rusted, but they looked recent. On the wall above, scratched into the wood, was a name: ELEANOR. I touched the mirror, and the glass rippled. In the reflection, I saw a different room—a bedroom, where a woman with a gaunt face sat on a bed, combing her hair. She looked up, directly at me, and smiled. Then the mirror turned black.

We scrambled downstairs, told Dad everything. He didn’t believe us at first, but that afternoon, as we prepared to leave, he found the chains on the floor in the kitchen, broken, and the mirror from the attic standing at the end of the hallway. We packed our bags in a frenzy, but as we drove away, I glanced in the rearview mirror. In the upstairs window, the same figure stood, watching us. I blinked, and she was gone.

We never returned to Gull’s Perch. But years later, I learned that the house was demolished, and workers found a hidden cellar beneath the foundation, filled with dozens of mirrors, each one scratched with the names of visitors who had stayed overnight. My name was among them, carved into the frame of the smallest one. And on the back, in old handwriting, were the words: ‘She always comes back.’
