My younger brother Leo was staying with me for the afternoon while our aunt ran errands. I needed to wash up, so I told him I was going to take a quick bath and would be out soon.
I had just settled into the warm water when the bathroom door flew open. Leo stood there, his face pale and wet with tears. He stammered that he had been reading a comic book when a voice came from the heating vent.
I asked him what it said. He whispered that it had called me a cruel name, one he did not recognize. We were careful with our words around him, so this was strange and unsettling.
I wrapped myself in a robe and went with him to his room. I knelt down and tapped the metal vent firmly. “That is not allowed,” I said sternly. I looked at Leo. “What is it doing now?”
He listened for a moment, his eyes wide. “It’s just… humming,” he said. “A happy hum.”
I live in a different city now. My cousin rents that old apartment and says it is perfectly quiet. But I have not visited, and I do not plan to.
