At nine, I lost my cat, Mister Nocturne, to a wasting sickness that stole his white blood cells after a stray bit him. We buried him under the old oak in our backyard, and I remember pressing my palm into the fresh dirt, whispering that I wished I could see him just one more time.

Months later, I was curled in my mother’s bed because my father had taken a night shift. She slept like the dead, but I lay wide awake, staring at the sliver of moonlight beneath the curtains. Then came a sound that made my skin prickle: a low, throaty purr, rumbling from under the bed. It was exactly Mister Nocturne’s purr, the one he made when he kneaded my chest. I wanted to look, but my body refused to move. The purr continued for minutes, then stopped. I counted my breaths until dawn.

A fortnight passed. I was in the garden, laying daisies atop Mister Nocturne’s grave, when I heard a soft meow behind me. I turned, and there he was—black and white, tail held high, walking toward me with that familiar confident stride. I blinked, and he vanished. I searched the garden, but found only the wind through the grass.

The next week, my aunt arrived bearing a cardboard box with a tiny kitten. It had fur of pure black and white, and its eyes were the same amber as Mister Nocturne’s. My mother gasped, and I felt tears sting my eyes. It was as if Mister Nocturne had sent him from heaven to comfort me. I scooped the kitten into my arms, feeling his tiny heartbeat against my chest. I knew then, with a certainty that chilled me, that this kitten was not a replacement—it was a messenger. And the purr under the bed had been a promise, not of comfort, but of something far more sinister waiting to be unearthed.
