The rambling Victorian house, purchased by the Ashworths in the autumn of ’81, had a peculiar stillness about it, even in the brightest daylight. It had belonged, for decades, to a recluse, a woman whispered to have been a renowned opera singer from a bygone era. Elias, born in ’82, carried the house’s quiet unease with him from toddlerhood.

His first conscious brush with the uncanny happened when he was barely five. He woke in the dead of night, the air thick with an unfamiliar scent, like stale perfume and dust. A faint luminescence drew him from his room, down the creaking hallway towards the dining room. There, perched precariously on the antique mahogany table, was a deer. Not a living creature, but something impossibly delicate, fashioned from what looked like cracked porcelain. Its antlers branched into fragile, opalescent flowers, and its eyes, vast and black, seemed to absorb the faint moonlight filtering through the bay windows. Elias, heart hammering, scrambled back to his parents’ room, seeking refuge in their familiar presence. His parents, predictably, attributed it to a dream, a trick of the dim light.

Yet, the occurrences escalated. He’d lie awake, listening to a faint, rhythmic tapping emanating from the disused chimney breast in his bedroom, a sound like a tiny, insistent fingernail. The antique wardrobe in the corner seemed to breathe, its dark wood panels subtly shifting. Sometimes, he’d catch glimpses of movement from the corner of his eye – a fleeting, elongated shape that dissolved when he turned his head. The house itself seemed to hold its breath, waiting, and Elias felt an invisible audience watching his every move, their presence a constant, cold pressure against his skin.
