I never believed in spirits, not even after my grandmother’s death, when the house seemed to hold its breath. But that changed the night the pine-scented stillness of our cabin on Lake Serenity turned wrong.

It was late autumn, and the lake was a mirror of black glass under a bruised sky. I’d come alone to close the cabin for winter, a routine I’d done for years. That night, I lay in the loft bedroom, the window open to the chill air, the smell of pine needles and damp earth drifting in. My phone was off, the only light the faint glow of a battery-powered lantern on the nightstand. I had my back to the door, facing the window, when a shadow moved.

It wasn’t a trick of the light. The lantern cast a steady, amber pool, and through my nearly closed lids, I saw a darkness that didn’t match the room’s dimness. It slid across the far wall, from the closet to the door, impossibly solid, like a piece of night had torn free. I snapped my eyes open, but the room was empty. The shadow was gone. I waited, heart pounding, but there was nothing. I did what my mother taught me: I prayed aloud, my voice thin in the silence, asking for protection. The feeling of being watched faded, and I convinced myself it was a dream, a trick of exhaustion.

A week later, I was still at the cabin, having extended my stay to prepare for the first snow. I was in the living room, reading by the fire, when the sensation returned. It wasn’t just watching; it was a weight, pressing on my mind, emanating from the hallway that led to the bedrooms. The air grew thick, smelling not of pine but of something rotten, like spoiled meat and old ashes. I didn’t hear footsteps, but I felt a presence, cold and intelligent, waiting. It wasn’t a ghost; it was something older, something that had followed the shadow.

I dropped my book and stood, my legs trembling. I remembered my prayer from before, but this time I didn’t just pray; I spoke aloud, my voice cracking, ‘You are not welcome here. You are bound to the pit, and you have no power over me or this house. I claim this place in the name of the one who is higher than all. Leave now.’ The words felt clumsy, but as I said them, the pressure lessened. The smell of rot faded, replaced by the clean scent of pine. The cold in the hallway dissipated, and the fire seemed to burn brighter.

But I knew it wasn’t over. That night, I couldn’t sleep. I lay in the loft, listening to the wind, and I saw the shadow again. It wasn’t running this time; it stood at the foot of my bed, a tall, featureless silhouette that seemed to absorb the moonlight. I felt its gaze, hungry and patient. I prayed again, aloud, with every ounce of faith I had, and I did not look away. I stared at it, and I said, ‘You have no power here. You belong in the darkness below, and you will not touch me or this place.’

The shadow wavered, then shifted. For a second, I thought I saw a face within it, twisted and hungry, but then it was gone. The room was empty, and the oppressive weight lifted. I stayed awake till dawn, my Bible clutched to my chest.

It hasn’t returned since, but I know it’s not because I banished it for good. The shadow was a scout, a tendril of something vast and old. I will leave this cabin, and I will never return. The pine-scented stillness is no longer peaceful; it’s a mask for a presence that waits, patient, watching from the corners of the world. And I know, if anyone else ever stays here, they’ll feel it too. They’ll hear the silence deepen, see the shadows move wrong, and they’ll ask themselves what they truly believe. And they’ll remember my warning, carved into the doorframe: ‘Do not stay alone here. The dark is watching.’
