The motel room on Route 9 had a certain kind of stillness that made Eleanor uneasy. It was the kind of place where the wallpaper peeled like dead skin and the air conditioner wheezed with the effort of a dying man. She had checked in at 11 PM after a long drive, her eyes gritty from exhaustion. She had turned on the TV to some late-night comedy show, the canned laughter a poor shield against the silence that seemed to press in from all sides.

She must have drifted off somewhere between the host’s monologue and a commercial for a miracle cleaner. When she woke, the clock on the nightstand glowed a malevolent 1:27 AM. At first, she didn’t register anything wrong. Just the familiar fog of sleep. But when she tried to shift her weight, to turn onto her side, nothing happened. Her limbs were lead, pinned to the mattress by an invisible weight. Her heart spiked, a frantic drumbeat against her ribs. She tried to move her fingers, her toes. Nothing. Only her eyes could move, darting to the corners of the room, searching for a threat that her frozen body couldn’t face.

Then she felt it—a breath, cold and damp, right beside her left ear. It stirred the tiny hairs on her neck, and with it came a sound, a low, gurgling chuckle that seemed to come from all around her, yet impossibly close. She willed herself to scream, but her throat was a closed fist. The air was thick with the scent of something old and sweet, like rotting flowers.

Panic clawed at her. She heard footsteps, heavy and deliberate, moving behind the headboard, circling the bed. She strained to see, but her eyes could only move so far. The steps stopped right where she guessed the foot of the bed would be. The laughter came again, closer, and another shiver of cold air washed over her. It was as if something was savoring her terror.

Just when she thought she might pass out from sheer fright, the pressure on her chest suddenly lifted, like a great weight being removed. The invisible bonds snapped, and she gasped, her body flooding with the ability to move again. She lurched upright, fumbling for the lamp switch. The room flooded with harsh yellow light. There was nothing there. The door was locked, the window shut. But as she looked down at the bed, her stomach dropped. There was a deep indentation in the covers, right beside her, the shape of a body that was not there. The comforter was smooth everywhere else, but this one spot was pressed down as if someone had been sitting there.

She didn’t sleep again that night. She sat in the corner chair, knees drawn to her chest, watching the motel room door and the empty space at the foot of the bed. The TV flickered silently. Outside, the wind rattled the window. She tried to rationalize it—a night terror, sleep paralysis, a trick of her exhausted mind. But the indent remained, a physical accusation.

At dawn, she packed her bags quickly, her hands shaking. She paid the clerk, a man with a face like a crumpled receipt, and asked if there had been any complaints about the room. He just stared at her for a long moment, then said, ‘That room’s had its share of odd events. October’s the worst. Funny, the previous guest left early too, said he heard laughter in the walls.’ Eleanor didn’t wait for him to finish. She threw her bag into the car and drove, leaving the motel behind in the rearview mirror, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had gotten into her car with her. The air in the car, despite the warm morning, was cold, and she could have sworn she heard a faint, gurgling chuckle just beside her left ear. She didn’t stop driving until she reached a town with people, bright lights, and no motels named ‘The Hollow Rest.’
