A woman named Lena moved with her infant son into a ground-level flat. From the moment they crossed the threshold, the baby began to wail. He would not be comforted. Outside, on the street or in the park, he was calm and cheerful. But the moment they returned home, his cries would start again.

Lena worried the flat itself was making him ill. Perhaps it was damp, or a smell from the drains. They packed their things and moved to a new building on a sunlit street. Yet, as soon as they were inside, the crying began once more.

Baffled, Lena looked at the items she had brought from the old home. Her eyes fell on a decorative shelf liner, left behind by the last occupant of the ground-level flat. Its intricate, swirling design was lovely to her, but she wondered. She took the paper and placed it in a storage box far from her son’s sight. From that day on, the crying stopped.
