I was eight, my brother Eli was eleven. We were huddled around the old desktop in our basement, the glow of the screen casting strange shadows on the concrete walls. It was 4 AM, and we were deep into a pixelated adventure, the only sounds the click-clack of the mouse and the hum of the ancient computer. The house was silent above us, our parents asleep in their room on the second floor.

Then I saw it. By the staircase, in the dim light from the screen, stood a figure. It was a man, tall and gaunt, wearing a tattered bathrobe that hung loosely on his frame. His face was pale, almost translucent, and his eyes were dark hollows. He stared at us with an expression of pure hatred, his lips twisted into a snarl. I froze, my heart pounding in my chest. I opened my mouth to scream, but no sound came out.

Eli noticed my terror. ‘What’s wrong?’ he whispered, his eyes following my gaze. He saw the figure too, but he described it differently. ‘He’s not transparent,’ he said, his voice trembling. ‘He looks solid. And he’s moving towards the door.’ I looked again, and the figure was indeed walking, his bare feet making no sound on the concrete floor. As he reached the bottom of the stairs, he simply dissolved into nothing, like mist in the morning air.

We scrambled up the stairs, our hearts racing. We ran to our parents’ bedroom, throwing open the door. There was our father, fast asleep in his bed, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. His favorite robe was draped over the chair. We woke him, babbling about what we had seen. He rubbed his eyes, confused, and told us we must have been dreaming. But we were wide awake, and we both described the same man, the same robe, the same face. It was him, but it wasn’t.

The next morning, we told our grandmother, who lived with us. She was a practical woman, a retired nurse. She scoffed at the idea of ghosts. ‘There’s no such thing,’ she said firmly. ‘It was probably a dream, or a trick of the light.’ But her eyes betrayed a flicker of unease. She looked at our father, then at us, and said, ‘But if you saw something, it might be an evil spirit, trying to drive you away from this house.’ She started muttering prayers under her breath, and we never spoke of it again.

But I never forgot that morning. The image of that pale, angry man is burned into my memory. And sometimes, in the dead of night, when the house is silent and the computer hums in the basement, I catch a glimpse of him out of the corner of my eye, lurking in the shadows, waiting. And I wonder, was it my father’s doppelgänger, or something far more sinister that wore his face? The truth, I fear, is something I may never fully understand.
